About the show:

On nearly all photographs something is depicted. A lot can be said about that something on or in a photo. One cannot be oblivious about that. However, the photo by itself is also something, a physical object with tactile qualities, which can come to life in a space. Next to the traditional idea of the photo as means of representation, it can also – as an object – become part of a plastic presentation.

The exhibition A Group Show focuses on an alternative approach to the photographic object. It emphasizes the way images are being incorporated by artists, and how photography is used in an (often associative) game of construction and deconstruction of the medium itself. The exposition wishes to accentuate the material and spatial features of the image instead of its representational values. It brings together people with an investigating attitude towards the medium photography and creates a context in which there’s plenty of room for discussion and experiment.

A Group Show should be seen as a temporary ‘working environment’, in which curators and artists discuss about the notion of ‘space’. The artists are being invited, starting from their autonomous work, to engage in the realization of the exposition and to participate in a dialogue on how to construct a meaningful whole.
His contribution was entitled ‘Everything Is Useful So Nothing Gets Thrown Away’.

In this work he tried to examine the way that lines evoke form and reality, by producing abstract pictures inspired by the tradition of realistic paintings. Because of this painterly approach towards the general properties of a picture, they are stripped of the redundant reference to reality down to only a few baselines to determine the image.

RE:COLLECTIONS is our project for ‘Sugary Photographs with Tricks, Poses and Effects’ – A Festival on Photography that takes place in Antwerp from the 19th of March till the 4th of April.

RE:COLLECTIONS starts from everyday, found footage that is being rethought and edited to enable ‘storytelling’. The central theme is the recollection and the act of recollecting.

RE:COLLECTIONS is a mobile exhibition room in the form of a white trailer. During the festival the trailer will travel to several sites in Antwerp, which will become the starting point for a variety of short interventions. Part of the works on show will be developed prior to the festival, others will be realized on the spot. With the final works and interventions RE: wants to engage in a dialogue with the visitors, the citizens of Antwerp ánd the streets and squares the trailer will be visiting.

Find more information about the locations on our temporary blog by clicking here. Prior to the festival we’ll stay a week at Madame Fortuna to develop the last interventions and have a few try outs. During the festival we’ll document the interventions and regularly add photos to the blog. Feel free to leave a comment!

Currently RE: is working on a new exhibition. The exhibition is a production of vzw Punctum. The working title for this project is A Group Show. It will take place September 2010 at Croxhapox. Below you can find a short text about the project. Any news or info concerning the show will be posted on this site so please pay us a visit in the near future…

A Group Show (working title)

Artworks: Rather random intervals of an intellectual process that can be lifted, continued, changed and destroyed infinitely. (from the ‘cahiers’ by Paul Valéry)

A Group Show will take place, September 2010, in Croxhapox, a multidisciplinary and experimental art house and an open working place for contemporary art, situated in Ghent. Croxhapox has no commercial activities, nor does it represent any artists, art disciplines or genres. It aims at shedding some light on the importance of artistic research and content. A Group Show finds herein a mutual endeavour.

Participating artists:
Edward Clydesdale Thomson (UK), Sara Deraedt (BE) , Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky (CH) , Anouk Kruithof (NL) , Alexandra Leykauf (DE) , Valérie Mannaerts (B) , Michèle Matyn (BE) , Saskia Noor van Imhoff (NL) , Jimmy Robert (FR) , Dominique Somers (BE) , Tania Theodorou (EL) , Kathleen Vinck (BE) , Claudia Weber (DE)

Publication:
As we clarified in our statement, ‘A Group Show’ should not be regarded as a curatorial exhibition but rather as a temporary working environment. The dialogues and the process leading up to this exhibition are regarded as an important part of the exhibition, because they have the possibility to change the process itself. Therefore we’d like to document and publish extracts from this process as an autonomous part of the exhibition in collaboration with Boris Van Den Eynden and Lieven Van Speybroeck of the Wim Wolkman Publisher Publishing Publish Company.

For Punctum we’ve set up a series of lectures again. The folowing three are due in the Fall of 2009:

Peter Verhelst on the Sisyphus-series by Dirk Braeckman – Tuesday November 24th (Hortazaal, KASK, Ghent)

Nickel Van Duijvenboden – Thursday November 26th (Zebrastraat, Ghent)

www.ilfaut.nl

Lucas Devriendt – Thursday December 10th (Hortazaal, KASK, Ghent)

www.lucasdevriendt.be

The lectures start at 20h at the Zebrastraat in Ghent (www.zebrastraat.be) or in the Victor Hortazaal from the KASK in Ghent (www.kask.be, Jozef Kluyskensstraat 2)
In his studio he shows a selection of images randomly collected. By zooming in on existing photographs he erases the presence of reality and creates a vague appearance. The result intends to be a hideout for the unknown, [a more associative approach] in search for a poetic shift between the real and the abstract.

For Punctum we’ve set up a series of lectures. The folowing three are due in Spring 2009:

Hans Aarsman – Thursday March 26th (Zebrastraat, Ghent)

www.photoq.nl/articles/columns/koekerd

Christophe Van Gerrewey – Thursday April 23th (Zebrastraat, Ghent)

Johan De Vos – Thursday May 28th (Hortazaal, KASK, Ghent)

www.johandevos.com

The lectures start at 20h at the Zebrastraat in Ghent (www.zebrastraat.be) or in the Victor Hortazaal from the KASK in Ghent (www.kask.be, Jozef Kluyskensstraat 2)

Acually the entire exhibition can be seen as a game – a game with its own, autonomous and changeable rules, a game that either you play or don’t play, a circular movement within which dividing lines are irrelevant. Or where the borderline can be regarded as an imaginary, disciplinary dividing line, which is being crossed or at least redefined.

Opening: Friday 20the February 2009, 19h
Saturday 21st February from 14h-18h
The title (12 cities, 13 accidents) is taken from a 90’s fiction program on Dutch public broadcasting television in which traffic accidents were reenacted. A text was written by maarten on the occation of the ‘een foto zegt meer dan 1000 woorden’ exhibition. It is available in the exhibition cataloque.

The exhibition with thirty ‘Finders’ and their preferred ‘Found image’ was on view in April 2008 in De Zaal in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) Gent.

“1000 Words” is about the found image, put in interaction with texts. For this we asked 30 writers, artists and critics to write ’something’ about pictures that sneaked into their lives. An anecdote, memories, a poem, reflections about the image…

Found photography can’t exist without it’s finder, the person that saved an anonymous photograph from oblivion. We’ve put this finding in a central position. By juxtaposing images and words we create a dialogue that introduces multiple perspectives and visions.

The exhibition also consisted of the website www.1000woorden.be and a publication/catalogue.
